So a friend of mine's mother sent me a recipe for a Hungarian cookie called kiflis (kee-flees). She is an avid reader of this blog, and she wanted to share a family recipe. I was deeply honored to have been given this recipe, and I wanted to show you guys how I made these kiflis.
There are only 3 ingredients, 1 cup of butter, 8 oz of cream cheese, and 2 cups of flour.
Combine the melted butter and cream cheese in a bowl.
Add the 2 cups of flour.
I used my cookie scoop to make little balls of these dough, and because it was very loose, I put them in the fridge for a few minutes.
Now for the filling, there are several options, there is a ground walnut filling that is mixed with cinnamon and sugar, a poppy seed filling and a prune filling. I decided on the nut version.
Once the dough is set enough roll it out flat and cut into quarters. this didn't work out too well for me, so I rolled them out and decided against cutting them into quarters, they were just too small.
I ground up hazelnuts and mixed it up with some sugar and cinnamon.
Place a bit of the filling and roll up the dough like a crescent.
Bake in a 350 degree oven until they are golden (about 20 minutes).
Ok, so these were a lot of work, and I won't lie, I got annoyed quite a few times while making them, but after tasting these...they are so worth the effort! They're flaky, rich, and the nut mixture adds just the right amount of sweetness.
Thank you Christine for giving me this recipe! They were a tasty and fun exercise!
Enjoy!
They were so very good. I appreciate the recipe donation as well!
